I am a Catholic researcher and organizer focused especially on international solidarity. I also serve on the international committee of the World Forum on Theology and Liberation.

In 2021, I completed a PhD in philosophy conjointly with the Institute for Christian Studies in Toronto and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where I researched the intersections of religious studies, colonialism, politics, and media theory. I also teach online courses on things like Christian anti-capitalism, Christianity and Marxism, and prison abolition.

Alongside my academic work, I served as a section editor at Geez Magazine (RIP), and I write occasional freelance pieces which have been published in places like The Nation, America Magazine, Sojourners, and Commonweal Magazine. I have also been quoted as an expert on issues related to Catholicism, social justice, and the religious left. I’m available for comment and freelance writing, just send me an email at dean.dettloff@gmail.com!

I also co-host the podcast The Magnificast with my colleague Matt Bernico, exploring Christianity and leftist politics. Together, we wrote the book Enough Is Enough: Degrowth, Capitalism, and Liberation Theology.
